WILL I NEED PLANNING PERMISSION FOR MY GATE?
It’s always wise to check with your local planning authority, but usually you don’t need planning permission to replace an existing gate. You’re more likely to need planning permission for a brand new installation where there wasn’t a gate before.
DO I HAVE TO BUY EVERYTHING AT ONCE?
If we’re able to convert your existing gate, we will do so. However, sometimes an existing gate will be incompatible with your chosen automation method. We’ll advise you at the site assessment whether you will need to purchase a new gate or not.

DOES PORTCULLIS ELECTRIC GATES DO THE GROUNDWORK AND ANY BRICKWORK REQUIRED?
IWe have long-standing partnerships with local contractors. We don’t do the groundwork ourselves but can arrange this service on your behalf, and provide you with a quote.
CAN I USE MY OWN CONTRACTS TO UNDERTAKE SOME OF THE WORK?
If you already have a contractor you trust, we are happy to co-ordinate with them. However, we do ask that you make your wishes clear to us as soon as possible, to avoid any delays later in the process.
HOW LONG WILL THE PROCESS TAKE TO GET THE GATES INSTALLED?
Once we have received your order, completion takes an average of 6 weeks. This depends on the complexity of the project and has been as short as 2 weeks in some past cases.
WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS TO OPEN AND CLOSE THE GATE?
There are many options available to work your gates, which we will explain to you in detail during your site assessment. We also have information about these options on our automation page.
HOW SAFE ARE THE GATES YOU INSTALL?
Safety is one of our key priorities, so you can be confident that our gates are safe for everyone, even children and pets. Once the installation is complete, we insist on a formal on-site handover so that we can demonstrate how to safely operate your gates.
DO THE GATES NEED SERVICING?
It is very important that the gates are serviced every year, at minimum. For properties where the gates are used several times a day, such as developments or commercial sites, more frequent servicing is highly recommended.

We’ll send you reminders when your gate servicing is due. One of our engineers will check through the automation system and safety devices and top up the oil. Afterwards you’ll get a report for your records, which will highlight any maintenance work needed and the estimated costs.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE GATES STOP WORKING?
With regular maintenance, your gates should operate smoothly. If they do stop working, here are a few things you can try:

Make sure that there is power running to the gates
Make sure there is nothing blocking the gates from closing or opening (even overgrown bushes and trees)
Check that the safety strip has not been damaged
Reset the power to the gates

WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE IS A POWER CUT?
During the safety handover, we will show you how to put your gates on manual release. This means that you will be able to manually open and close your gates even when there is no power. You may need to reset the gates when the power comes back on.
